Janisete Gomes da Silva Miller has a BSc. in Biological Sciences (Universidade de São Paulo), an MSc. in Biological Sciences (Genetics 1988), and a PhD on Biological Sciences (Genetics) from Universidade de São Paulo/The Pennsylvania State University (USA) (1996).

She was a postdoctoral researcher at the Pennsylvania State University (USA) from 1997 to 2000 with a fellowship from the California Department of Agriculture (CDFA).

At present, she is a full professor at Universidade Estadual de Santa Cruz  (2001 to present) and the vice-chair of the Graduate Program in Genetics and Molecular Biology at UESC. She was a member of the Technical Advisory Board On Biological Sciences and Environment at the Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa no Estado da Bahia (FAPESB) (2007-2010).

She is a member of the Steering Committee of the Working Group on Fruit Flies of the Western Hemisphere (TWWH) and also of the Steering Committee do International Symposia on Fruit Flies of Economic Importance.

Interest in Research

She has been studying Ecology, Molecular Genetics and Evolution of pest insects of global quarantine significance. Her research has focused on on the use of genetic tools to examine molecular systematics, phylogeography, population genetics, and integrative taxonomy on fruit flies (Tephritidae) and ants (Ponerinae).

 

She has coordinated and collaborated in projects with funding from Brazilian agencies  (CNPq, FAPESB, EMBRAPA) and international agencies (International Agency of Atomic Energy – IAEA-FAO/ONU) in collaboration with the following institutions in Brazil and abroad:

Student supervision

 

She has advised graduate students at the Graduate Program in Genetics and Molecular Biology and the Graduate Program in Zoology at UESC and also  in the Graduate Program in Entomology at the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia and at the Universidade Federal do Amapá.

 

Teaching

She has extensive experience teaching graduate courses (Scientific Writing, Molecular Biology applied to Zoology) and undergraduate courses (Evolution, Molecular Genetics of Microorganisms).
